ASIBA in the News: Grid and bear it, maps for future 5 December 2006 - Sydney Morning Herald and the Melbourne Age ASIBA once again secured coevrage for its members and the industry in major popular press. This time a number of the winners of APSEA 2006 awards were recognised. The article went on to talk about other induustry issues including the NSW Government's purchase of a digital aerial photography camera, which did not go down well with the industry and special mention of our growing skills shortage.
ASIBA in the News: Measurement of Water an Issue to be Resolved 12 September 2006 - Melbourne Age and The Sydney Morning Herald ASIBA has continued its fight to build awareness of the importance of accurate spatial data on water. The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age (Melbourne) both published an article by Simon Sharwood. The article went on to also discuss Special Minister of State Gary Nairn's influence on spatially enabled government and some interesting coverage of the recent Victorian Spatial Excellence Awards.
ASIBA in the News: Call for national water resources gauge 20 October 2006 [Page 71] - The Australian Financial Review, by Christopher Jay Australia urgently needs, for the first time, a comprehensive scientific assessment of just how much water is actually available for farmland, the environment and coastal cities, according to the chief executive officer of the Australian Spatial Information Business Association. The survey should be done on a national basis, to sidestep differing state water definitions and standards, and should give an accurate quantitative picture to allow effective forward planning for a coming water crisis.
"You have to make sure it's consistent across all states and territories," ASIBA chief David Hocking said. The main inland water flows, notably the Murray-Darling system, crossed several states, so that uniform methodology, water area definitions, flow measurement techniques and conceptual approaches were essential.

ASIBA published a number of information products; to preserve our forests and to reduce costs these are largely produced in electronic format. Formost is the quarterly publication InSite, which is an opportunity for members and the wider community to hear what ASIBA is doing, what its aspirations are and where it sees future challenges.

Submissions
ASIBA has a very important role within the industry; it is the voice of the private sector of the spatial informaiton industry. The Association prepares submissions on a range of public policy issues at the national and regional levels and also supports such submissions with oral evidence to parliamentary inquiries and reviews.
The most current submission is on the Report by the Taskforce on Reducing Regulatory Burdens on Business: Rethinking Regulation, which is an Australian Government Inquiry.
